Aquitaine (France)
Hessen and Aquitaine have been partners since 1995. Aquitaine is located in southwest France, bordered by the Atlantic coast in the west, the Pyrenees in the south and the Garonne in the northeast. It forms the geographic link between northern and southern Europe.
Bordeaux, the capital, as well as Pau and Biarritz, are its most important cities. 2.8 million inhabitants live in this region and in terms of area, it is about twice the size of Hessen. Hessen and Emilia-Romagna have been in partnership with each other since 1992. Emilia-Romagna lies in the north of Italy between the Po valley and the Apennines. Bologna, the capital, Modena, Parma, Ravenna and Piacenza are its most important cities. More than 3.9 million people live in this region and its area corresponds approximately to that of Hessen.
Emilia-Romagna is an important centre of the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, the manufacture of tiles and textile goods as well as the food industry. Many innovative enterprises make it one of Italy’s most export-oriented regions. With its numerous art treasures from various epochs, it is in addition a popular tourist destination.

Wielkopolska has been a partner region of Hessen since December 2000. It has over 3.3 million inhabitants and with approximately 30,000 square kilometres is the second largest ‘Wojwodschaft’ in Poland. Wielkopolska is a region shaped by industry and agriculture, characterised by highly dynamic development and strong economic potential. As an attractive region in many regards, Wielkopolska is especially attractive for foreign investors.
The capital of Wielkopolska, Poznan, is Poland’s most important centre for trade fairs and exhibitions. Poznan possesses a modern airport and is a crossroads for several important European transit routes: Berlin - Poznan - Warsaw – Moscow, as well as Prague - Wroclaw - Poznan - Gdansk.
